High Blood Pressure

What is high blood pressure?

High blood pressure occurs when the force of the blood pumping through your arteries is consistently high for an extended period. Without early intervention and treatment, high blood pressure increases the risk of more serious health problems, including a heart attack or stroke.

What are the types of high blood pressure?

High blood pressure is classified into two categories:

Primary hypertension

Primary hypertension occurs over time and for no apparent reason. It’s thought that several factors play a role, including genes, environment, and changes within the body.

Secondary hypertension

Secondary hypertension occurs due to another underlying health problem. Some of the most common causes of secondary hypertension include kidney disease, obstructive sleep apnea, and thyroid problems.

What are the symptoms of high blood pressure?

Early on, high blood pressure presents few symptoms, but as the condition progresses, telltale signs include:

  • Headaches
  • Nosebleeds
  • Shortness of breath
  • Dizziness
  • Chest pain

If you’re concerned that you have high blood pressure, don’t wait to seek professional help. The sooner it’s diagnosed, the sooner you can take action to improve your health and quality of life.

How is high blood pressure diagnosed?

To diagnose hypertension, Lilian measures your blood pressure with an inflatable cuff and a pressure-measuring gauge. A normal reading is 120/80 mm Hg. Any number higher than that indicates high blood pressure.

If your blood pressure remains high for several days or weeks, Lilian might recommend additional tests like urinalysis, a cholesterol screening, or an electrocardiogram.

How is high blood pressure treated?

Treatment of high blood pressure depends on the type you have and the underlying cause. If you have primary hypertension, Lilian might recommend healthy lifestyle changes like losing weight, eating a balanced diet, and exercising regularly. If these measures don’t significantly lower your blood pressure readings, prescription medication may be necessary.

If you have secondary hypertension, Lilian develops a treatment plan to manage the underlying cause. For example, if diabetes is the reason you have high blood pressure, Lilian might recommend insulin therapy, healthy lifestyle changes, or regular checkups. When combined, these factors can help keep your blood pressure in check.

As you age and conditions change, Lilian adjusts your plan as necessary, ensuring you’re able to live a long, healthy, and vibrant life.
